Heritage Open Day - 19th November 2016 at the Grosvenor Centre

A few moments before 10am when the Heritage Open Day was about to open its doors, someone said. ‘Well I hope someone comes!’  Well - they did and they kept coming all day! By eleven in the morning the Main Hall was packed and the first talk in the Brearley Room (by the inimitable Bob Johnson) was filled to the brim with fervent listeners.

To say the day was successful is an understatement. It was estimated at least two hundred people attended, of every age, all enthusiastically browsing the huge number of photos and artefacts on view.

Meanwhile, Peter Jobling had spent a lot of time creating the centrepiece of the show: the 1838 Gnosall tithe map, hoisted by Peter’s unique framework to show it in its full majesty. Mary Booth & Co’s Kitchen was filled with old-fashioned cakes and coffee, made and donated by members of the Heritage Group. They raised an outstanding amount of money to contribute to our Group, as well as making all the visitors happy!

There were other talks throughout day that were equally well-attended, from Mike Corfield, Felicity Potter and Annette Davies. Yet the Main Hall was never empty, even when quite a few braved the rather inclement weather and completed a walk around the historic sites of Gnosall.

The day demonstrated that even those who had not been brought up in Gnosall were interested in the place where they live and they care about the village and its heritage. Some wanted to contribute their own old photographs as well, which is even more welcome.

The Heritage Group website, which you can find off the main www.gnosallparishcouncil.org, gives you an inkling of what was available on the day.

If you want to attend any of our meetings please come along on the 2nd Friday of any month at 2pm in the Grosvenor Centre’s Brearley Room. We’re open to everyone!     Page102.jpg
