Gnosall Best Kept Village 2020

We are planting trees to help tackle climate change

Scientists tell us that planting billions of trees across the world is one of the biggest, and cheapest ways of taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, to tackle the climate crisis. As trees grow, they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global warming. It is vital to reduce the current trends of rising greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels and forest destruction.

Tree planting is a climate change solution that does not require President Trump to immediately start believing in climate change, or for scientists to come up with technological solutions to draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. It is available now, it is the cheapest possible solution and everyone can get involved.

Gnosall’s big BKV project for 2020 is to plant lots of trees. In addition, villagers can make a tangible impact by planting trees in their own gardens. Planting a few trees in our gardens may seem like a trivial contribution. Nevertheless, it has more positive benefits than you might think. Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat for insects, birds, and other animals. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Trees cool the environment through their leaves by absorbing solar heat and provide shade for houses and streets. Trees remove nitrogen oxides and dust particles through their leaves. Trees look great and can make us happier!

Gnosall’s Best Kept Village Team has built and planted beautiful village flowerbeds. They hang over fifty hanging baskets and last year created the lovely wildflower meadow by the Health Centre. They have also worked with the Guides and Scouts to make bird boxes, bat boxes, bee houses, mini ponds and insect hotels. In 2020, the BKV team will be planting trees. Lots of trees! Will you help by planting at least one tree in your garden? Every little helps!

Do your research before you decide which tree(s) to plant. Great advice can be found on www.woodlandstrust.org.uk.
