A Brilliant Plan for Gnosall

 Press Release – 26th November

Gnosall has become only the second community in Staffordshire to have its Neighbourhood Plan formally approved.  Nearly 1000 residents turned out to vote in last month’s referendum, where an overwhelming 93% of parishioners chose to adopt the new plan. At a full Council meeting on 24th November, Stafford Borough Council ratified the document. As part of the 2011 Localism Act, the new Plan will now become part of the local Development Plan.

This is a wonderful achievement for Gnosall after a lengthy and detailed process initiated by Gnosall Parish Council nearly three years ago.  Its success is testament to the hard work of the village’s Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group (consisting of local residents and Parish Councillors), who developed the plan in consultation with the Borough Council and local community.

Chairman of the Steering Group, Jeff Rhodes commented: - I’m delighted we’ve been able to deliver this important planning policy document for Gnosall Parish, to help protect existing environmental resources and shape future development.  It shows what can be achieved when a community works together, particularly when you realise that only around a hundred Neighbourhood Plans in the entire country have made it this far and this is the first in Stafford Borough.  Not only that, but by drawing on skills in the working group we’ve been able to do it at almost no cost to Gnosall residents – I very much doubt any other Neighbourhood Plans can claim that.

More than 8 million people live in areas involved in neighbourhood planning and the new Planning Minister, Brandon Lewis, is pushing for more Neighbourhood Planning as part of the new Housing and Planning Bill. The minister has already been in touch with Gnosall Parish Council with an invitation to be part of a national “Champions” network, based on Gnosall’s early success.
