It is with deep sadness that the Parish Council announces the recent passing of Derek Watson-Jones, whose memorial service was held in Newport on 14th February 2018 and was attended by Cllr Jennifer Tomkinson and Cllr Graham Payne.
Derek was a young farmer from Moreton when he was elected to the Parish Council on 20th May 1958 to serve as a Councillor representing the Wards of Moreton, Bromstead and Outwoods. For some of the time during his term of office he was elected to the role of Chairman of Council and continued to serve the Parish as a Councillor, offering guidance and sharing his knowledge and expertise, until his retirement in 2015. Derek was a well respected and loyal member of the Council and to celebrate achieving 50 years of service, the Chairman at the time, Cllr Graham Payne, presented Derek with a gift to commemorate the event. Derek sadly announced his decision to retire from public service in 2015 after 57 years as a Parish Councillor, partly due to retirement and also because he was planning to move out of the Parish. He was presented with a replica model tractor by Cllr Roger Greatrex in recognition of Derek’s tremendous long service, which was probably the longest term of office anyone had ever achieved throughout the history of Parish Councils.
The Parish Council offers its condolences to Derek’s family and there is some comfort in the knowledge that he will be remembered by many as a gentleman and friend.
