In the last edition of the GMK magazine, GLEAN was delighted to announce that it had been successful in its bid to manage a community library in Gnosall (in association with Staffordshire County Council.) At that stage, however, the County Council was not convinced by GLEAN’s plan to house the library in an extension to the existing portakabin building where the Youth Club is based.
Since then GLEAN has met Council officers and, after reviewing other possible accommodation and further studying the detail of the original GLEAN bid, the outcome was that the Council now accepts that GLEAN’s plan is the best option. We have discussed the rent to be charged and the County Council has offered to provide a capital sum towards the purchase and installation of the new additional portakabin in lieu of part of the rent. The project requires planning permission and the application has now been submitted. GLEAN did seek formal pre-planning advice from Stafford Borough first and, whilst there were a number of comments (which have been addressed), the conclusion was that the application is likely to be successful.
Our estimate for the extension project is £12000 to £15000. We have pledges for the bulk of this and are applying to other possible funding sources (any offers of support welcome!) There are some sources that we cannot approach yet because their rules require that we have planning permission first.
The origins of GLEAN are less than a year old and, although progress can feel frustratingly slow, the project has clearly moved forward. This would have not been possible without the help and encouragement of Gnosall Parish Council and we would like to thank them publicly for this.
